Ugly on Netflix: Is the Ending the Same as the Book?

Uglya dystopia adapted from a novel

Worn by Joey King, Ugly was released on September 13 on Netflix. The film immerses us in a dystopian society which requires all individuals to undergo cosmetic surgery at the age of 16. At the center of the story, a teenager named Tally grows impatient as her surgery date approaches. But when one of her friends runs away, decides to go and look for him. What he will discover during his journey will make him to profoundly question what he thought he knew.

If Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson wrote the screenplayUglyThey based on the book of the same name written by Scott Westerfeld, first volume of a saga. However, they took some creative liberties with their adaptation. There are therefore differences between the feature film and the novel from which it is based. In particular in the end.

Different outcome for Peris

At the end of the film directed by McG, Tally makes a strong decision: she chooses to undergo surgery so that David can then test his cure on her. For her part, Peris remembers the one who was his best friend when he falls from a roof. However, this character does not know this not the same fate at the end of the first book from the saga by Scott Westerfeld.

In the novel Peris does not fall from a roof. After the argument with Tally, we just don’t hear about him anymore. On the other hand, it comes back in the rest of the story. It is present in the two novels that follow Uglytitled respectively Beauties AND Specials.

Good chance of a sequel

Given his special abilities that give him strong resistance to impacts, we can assume that Peris has therefore withstood the fall at the end of the film. And that he will return later. For this to happen, however, Netflix will have to order a second feature film. But it should be. Because, according to the data from Flix Patrol, Ugly East at the top of the most viewed films on the platform in many territories since its release.

Unless the number of spectators suddenly drops, the film has therefore good chance of a sequel. It is still too early to know if all the volumes of the saga written by Scott Westerfeld will be adapted. Overall, the author has divided the story of Tally and her friends into five pounds.
