Monteith passed away at age 31 in 2013.
Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushtowitz remembered the last recording of Glee with Cory Monteith. In the most recent episode of the podcast And That’s What You Really Missedthey revisited episode 19 of the series’ fourth season — the last one in which Monteith appears as Finn Hudson.
In the episode in question, which aired just months before the death of Monteithin 2013, the original glee club members sang “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journeyas in the first episode of the series. Cory died at age 31 after mixing alcohol and heroin.

“The energy wasn’t good,” McHale told (via People). “It was just a weird day. Nothing necessarily bad happened, but the energy was weird.”
Ushkowitz added: “To be perfectly honest, there were rumors going around at the time about what was going on with Cory. It had nothing to do with the way he was acting at all. We weren’t being told anything. It was just talk.”

McHalethen, highlighted that Monteith He struggled with substance abuse early on and was “distant” on the day of the shoot. “Obviously, in retrospect, it’s easy to maybe attribute more meaning to those things. It could also have just been that we were all tired that day,” he said. “It’s not weird that you don’t spend a lot of time with people between takes. You’re surrounded by people and you don’t really pay attention to that.”
Even so, McHale recalled that the cast “did Cory laugh.” To the actors, everyone seemed strange that day. They had already performed “Don’t Stop Believin'” several times during the series and every night of the tour. Glee Live! In Concert! Additionally, the cast had not worked together for some time, as their characters had taken on different roles.
“Everyone was kind of separated, and it felt weird,” he explained. McHale. “We didn’t work with Lea there was a long time.”
“It was like we were transported back in time, but not completely,” he said. Ushtowitz about scene with Lea Michele.
“I think that day we were just going through the motions. We were all a little bit distant, I think that’s how it felt,” McHale He continued. “It’s crazy that we both had the same feeling, but we couldn’t quite put our finger on what was going on.”
“I honestly feel like there was a lot going on behind the scenes, a lot of tension, a lot of things going on,” Ushkowitz replied. “Serious stuff,” McHale added. “I think there was stuff going on with Cory that we really don’t…”
“We weren’t aware,” he added. Ushkowitz.
