Danny Boyle at the forefront of technology
This is not a historic first, since Sean Baker and Steven Soderbergh did it before him, respectively for mandarin in 2015 and Paranoia in 2018. But this is the first time a director, Danny Boyle in this case, uses film-making technology.iPhone shoot a film on a budget of $75 million.
In fact, as revealed and confirmed by Wired, 28 years laterthe new film of the saga 28 – and the first work of a new trilogy – was entirely shot with iPhone 15 Pro Max. Obviously the Apple smartphone was not simply used manually, but enhanced with different lenses and equipment, as we can see at the bottom right in the photo below.

From smartphone to professional camera
Today there is no longer any technological problem of telephony for Apple’s flagship product and communication is increasingly done through messaging applications. For several years and therefore several iPhone models, these are above all its image acquisition and display capabilities that are highlighted. And in this area, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s capabilities are professional-level, with 4K resolution and the ability to record 60 frames per second. Of course, the images obtained from the iPhone – as from any camera – to become cinematic images, go through the necessary post-production.
This is therefore, for this long-awaited film, a significant novelty that could become very widespread. Wired also indicates that other cameras were used. Namely the “action cams” (like GoPro or Dji) attached farm animals !
28 years laterwhich includes Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Cillian Murphy in the cast, is expected in theaters on June 18, 2025.
