Don’t speak badlythe back-to-school horror hit
Currently in theaters, Don’t speak badly by James Watkins offers James McAvoy the opportunity for a memorable performance. Produced by Blumhouse, this horror film that plays with the codes of the home invasion giving them back is a critical and public success, having already grossed more than $26 million revenues for a production budget of 15 million.
An American family spends the weekend at the dream property of a charming British family they met on vacation. But this stay, which promises to be idyllic, soon turns into a terrible nightmare…
If the idea of Don’t speak badly It’s excellent, but it’s not James Watkins’ original idea. He has since adapted his own screenplay and film the Danish film of the same namereleased in 2022. The American film is very faithful to the Danish film, with one important exception: its conclusion. And this did not please Christian Tafdrup, director of Don’t speak badly Danish.
An ending too dark for Americans (SPOILER)
First of all, it is amusing to see how much the American film repeats the Danish film almost word for word and shot for shot. On holiday in Tuscany, Bjorn (Morten Burian), Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch) and their daughters Agnes become friends with Patrick (Fedja van Huêt), Karin (Karina Smulders) and their son Abel. The latter, it turns out, suffers from a tongue deformity that prevents him from speaking normally. Back home, Bjorn and Louise receive an invitation to spend a weekend with Patrick and Karin in Holland. They go there and the discomfort manifests itself gradually : Patrick is passive-aggressive and violent with Abel, while Karin is very directive and unpleasant with Agnes. Something is wrong with them, but when Bjorn realizes it, it’s too late…

The fundamental – and enormous – difference between the two films is that at the end of the Don’t speak badly from 2024, Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis) manage to escape the trap set by Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) and run away with Agnes and Ant (Abel in the Danish version). In Don’t speak badly of 2022, the original film, the ending is the exact opposite of this happy ending because – and we will say no more – Neither Bjorn nor Louise survive…
“I don’t understand this thing Americans have”
Therefore, James Watkins and Blumhouse did not just change the nationalities of the characters and the places of the story, but they invented a completely different ending. And we can understand why from the end Don’t speak badly by Christian Tafdrup is particularly dark, violent and desperateThe latter stated this in an interview with Distant on the end of the American film:
I don’t understand this thing that Americans have, but they are inclined to heroic stories, where good triumphs over evil, and this version of the film cultivates that. I think they made a very funny, effective and well-acted version of my film. But also a less “dangerous” version. They had a happy ending and it is very ingrained in their culture that America should be able to handle any situation.
So, for those who have a strong heart and want to go beyond the spectacle offered by the American Speak No Evil, we highly recommend the original Danish film which, more than the relief at the end of the story, ends on a trauma which is not easy to get rid of…
