Mary: A Touching Film Directed by Chris Evans
Published in 2017, Mary (Gifted in the original version), a family drama directed by Marc Webb and starring Chris Evans, is experiencing renewed global interest. Seven years after its initial theatrical release, the film hits theaters this week ranked second for most viewed movies on Netflix worldwideright behind Uglyan original production of the platform with the red logo.
Mary tells the story of Frank Adler (Chris Evans), a single man living in Florida, who finds himself responsible for raising his niece Mary (McKenna Grace) after the death of her sister. Very quickly, Frank discovers that Mary, only seven years old, is exceptional intellectual abilitiesespecially in mathematics. However, Frank wants Mary to live a normal life, away from the excessive attention that her gift might bring her.
When Mary’s grandmother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), learns of her granddaughter’s talent, she demands custody of the child so she can send him to special schools, against Frank’s wishes. This family conflict leads to a complex legal battle over what is best for the child.
An unexpected success thanks to Netflix
While it was well received by critics upon its release in 2017, Mary had not made enough of an impact to be a huge box office success. The film did, however, benefit from a solid performance by Chris Evans, then at the time on the rise thanks to his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His performance in this more intimate and emotional role showed a new side of the actor, away from superheroes.
In 2024, Mary is therefore experiencing an unexpected revival, becoming one of the most viewed Netflix films in the world, thanks to its recent arrival in the United States (the film is not available in France).
The rediscovery of older films on streaming platforms like Netflix is nothing new. These platforms often give a second life to works that, while not blockbusters at the time of release, find a new audience years later. A few months ago it was Dracula Untold which had experienced a resurgence of interest ten years after its release at the cinema.
