Megalopolisa film for the legend

What an adventure Megalopolis ! There is the film itself, 2h18 of cinematic madness between the decadent Roman epic and the futuristic dystopia of New York. Furthermore, the history of its manufacturing, imagined in the 1980s and then realized in the 1920s with the personal financing of Francis Ford Coppola of $120 millionand the filming was described as chaotic. Finally, there is its recent theatrical release with a very divided critical press and a likely major financial failure – its first weekend in North America is expected to take in just $5 million -.

But if Megalopolis if it only involved financial matters, it would never have seen the light of day. And Francis Ford Coppola, one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, did not invest 120 million dollars on the condition that sine qua non to recover them, or even earn more. No, he wanted to make this film, whatever the cost, and deliver to the world his great work that he had spent decades developing, against all odds. So, failed or not, Megalopolis it is already a point of reference and its author is proud of it, personally promoting it at festivals and wherever it is presented.

“There are those who are really intelligent…”

It is in this promotional setting, at the Toronto International Film Festival, that Francis Ford Coppola accompanied by Adam Driver dedicated his time to Deadline to talk about the topic Megalopolis. And among other topics he talked about two of his actors in Megalopolis, Adam Driver AND Shia LaBeoufcomparing them to two others he had worked with previously.

The actors, the casting, are also the authors of the film together with you (the director, ed.). Actors have two ways of working. There are those who are truly intelligent and produce truly extraordinary work with their mind. Warren Beatty is someone like that, with wonderful performances, because he’s intellectually brilliant. And there are others who are more intuitive, more “talented”. Al Pacino has both. He’s very smart, really, and very talented. Adam Driver has both too. Very talented, very intelligent.

Every actor has his own way of working. Shia LaBeouf is amazing! But… (laughs) He has a different technique… His technique is to drive you crazy! You’re so angry that you end up telling him, “Get out of there and do your thing!” Denis Hopper did the same thing. He was driving you crazy to the point where you couldn’t take it anymore and you let him.

A small game of comparisons from which Adam Driver and Shia LaBeouf do not emerge with the same qualities, but who still have the privilege of being compared to the two legends that are Al Pacino and Denis Hopper, respectively Francis Ford Coppola’s actors in the trilogy The Godfather and inside Apocalypse now AND Rusty James.
