Legendary Entertainment and Tobis, a German independent distributor and production company, have agreed to form a joint venture to “develop, produce and distribute premium series content in German”.
The venture was announced Thursday by Legendary CEO Joshua Grod and Tobis directors Tim Oberveland and Theo Greengel.
The newly formed company will be headquartered in Tobis’ newly opened Munich offices and will focus on “top-notch series and mini-series driven by exceptional local talent and content”. The company plans to work with traditional German broadcasters and streaming platforms.
“Tobis will assume operational leadership on the ground, while Legendary will handle the distribution of all content created by the joint venture outside German-speaking Europe,” the partners said.
“Forming a strategic partnership with Tim and Theo to identify and collaborate on best-in-class episodic content is a key part of our strategy to continue Legendary’s international growth,” said Grodd. “We are excited about this partnership and its future growth as we move into the international television market.”

Legendary and Tobis expect the deal to close and the company to begin operations in late summer, subject to clearance from the German antitrust agency.
