Turkey is renewed on Netflix
Turkeydirected by Jalil Lespert and released in 2019, it did not have the success hoped for in theaters, with only 2.1 million euros at the French box office for a budget estimated at 14 million. However, against all expectations, this film that was a bitter commercial failure is about to live on a second life on Netflix. Since its online release on the streaming platform, Turkey entered the top 10 of the most watched films in France. He is currently in sixth place.
The film, an adaptation of Georges Feydeau’s famous play, had been criticized for its lack of audacity and its adaptation was considered too faithful to the original work. However, thanks to Netflix, it seems to have found a new audience, attracted by the comedy and slapstick humor that works well on streaming.
A classic vaudeville comedy
Despite a prestigious cast that included Dany Boon, Guillaume Gallienne, Laure Calamy, Ahmed Sylla and Alice Pol, and a modern adaptation of this vaudeville classic, the film did not meet with the hoped-for success, both with critics and the public.
Adapted from the famous play by Georges Feydeau, Turkey tells the story of Pontagnac (played by Dany Boon), a man with a reputation as an inveterate seducer who tries to woo Victoire (Alice Pol), the wife of his friend Vatelin (Guillaume Gallienne). However, what begins as a simple comedy of seduction soon turns into a series of misunderstandings, lies and absurd situations typical of vaudeville.
In a series of incredible situations, the characters find themselves trapped in a game of misunderstandings. Pontagnac, who thought he was conquering Victoire, finds himself thwarted by a series of unexpected events, while Vatelin tries as best he can to preserve his marriage.
Both the play and the film are based on the art of vaudeville, with slamming doors, confused identities and angry husbands. It is this comic mechanism that made Feydeau successful on stage, but failed to translate effectively to the screen when the film was initially released.
