What true story inspired The Conjuring: Under the Devil’s Grip?
As with the previous parts, Conjuration: Under the influence of the devil it is inspired by a real case that marked the 80s. The film tells the story of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a man accused of murder in 1981. His defense? He claimed to be possessed by a demon at the time of the accident. This case, often called “the demon trial”, was the first time in American legal history that such a defense was used in a murder trial.
The Warrens, famous demonologists, were implicated in this affair after attempting to exorcise a boy, David Glatzel, who the Johnson family believed was possessed. According to the Warrens, the demonic spirit left the child’s body to possess Arne’s. The latter, a few months later, commits murder and invokes demonic influence in court. If the court did not accept this defense, this story has left its mark and it remains one of the most disturbing in the Warren archives.
After the success of Conjuration: Under the influence of the devilanticipation is high for the rest of the saga. Evocation 4 is already in preparation and filming has just started in the UK. This fourth part should mark the end of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s adventures on screen, with Michael Chaves once again behind the camera. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will return their iconic roles. If plot details still remain unclear, the film is expected for September 2025, marking a new stage in the horrible universe created by James Wan.
