Robbie Williams is about to make his biopic
British singer-songwriter Robbie Williamsto whom we owe the pieces in particular Angels, Millennium, Rock DJ or even Touch will be the subject of a biopic. The former Take That member, who launched his solo career in 1995, is a major figure in music and inspired Michael Gracey, the director of The greatest showmanfor his next feature film titled Better man. The film will focus on the singer’s rise, his fame with Take That, his subsequent difficulties and his return to success with Angels in 1997.
On paper nothing so original. We could expect a fairly classic biopic that traces the personality’s life with its ups and downs. Only Michael Gracey should surprise people Better mansince as we find out with the first trailer (video on the front page of the article), Robbie Williams will be embodied on the screen by… A monkey!
The pop star played by a monkey
In fact, we learn from Robbie Williams’ voiceover that, although “one of the biggest pop stars in the world“it has always been considered”less evolved“. Michael Gracey then made the original choice to give him the face of a monkey created using synthetic images. An interesting artistic approach, which at least allows us to put aside the questions of similarity or otherwise that generally accompany biopics. However, we will see if this monkey face really brings something more and is not just a funny artifice.
Beyond this element, we note the director’s desire to highlight Robbie Williams’ exceptional showmanship. The images of Better man showing the singer during impressive concerts in front of thousands of people. The film should also be composed surreal scenes which may be the representation of the singer’s fantasies and dreams, or the consequence of drug use, or simply specific to the musical comedy genre.
In any case, this global approach does Better man immediately more intriguing. The film will be available in American theaters on January 17, 2025. The release date in France remains to be confirmed.
