Xavier Dolan clarifies his return
Coming out of his (brief) retirement in August 2024 with the announcement that he was preparing a new film, the Quebec filmmaker Xavier Dolan graced the Festival Lumière 2024 with his presence. For this edition, he held a masterclass and discussed in the theme of his return to feature films is particular. In fact, despite having directed 8 films between 2009 (I killed my mother) and 2019 (Mattia and Massimo), has since directed only one music video for Adele in 2021 and its miniseries The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up in 2022.
Luckily it was just a break from the big screen, as Xavier Dolan returned to making a feature film. And during this masterclass at the Lumière Festival, he provided important clarifications regarding this new film, initially announced as a horror movie.
It will be a genre film, that’s for sure. Will it be a horror film? Maybe I spoke too quickly. There are many comedic elements in his writing. There will definitely be some horrific moments, but it’s more of a fusion of many genres.
The director also specifies that he hopes to start of filming in 2025 of this film which will therefore not be “simply” a horror film, but has the ambition of mixing multiple film genres.
“A second part of my career”
With this film, and looking back on his career, Xavier Dolan says he wants to open “a new chapter, a second part of a career in which I slowed down almost to a stop“. He states that he changed pace, realizing that he could no longer maintain the frenetic pace of the decade in which he directed eight feature films:
I was younger and I was different.
Particularly welcome news, since Xavier Dolan clearly presupposes an evolution in the approach to his profession and his work, and therefore suggests that with this new film we will discover a cinema different from the one he has accustomed his audience to.
