“A terrible musical”: the famous director lasted only 10 minutes before Joker 2

Joker 2 : a failure on every level

With Joker: Folie de duoRarely has a sequel been the opposite of its predecessor on so many levels. Not only artistically, but also in terms of production, revenues and critical reception. In fact, the first Joker (2019), already made by Joaquin Phoenix, had earned more than 1 billion dollars worldwide for a budget estimated at 55 million dollars. With Joker 2, the production cost would have risen up to $200 million. And with, to date, only $165 million raised worldwide, the film is on track to get made one of the big flops of the year. Moreover, starting from its second weekend of activity in the United States, the feature film recorded a drop in takings and found itself behind another clown, that of Terrify 3.

Finally, if the approach of the first work, a dramatic thriller very inspired by the films of Martin Scorsese, Taxi driver AND The Waltz of the Puppetshad convinced a good part of the press, of the surprising choice of make the sequel a musical he was not applauded this time. With currently 33% positive reviews from the press onwards Rotten tomatoesJoker 2 is a disappointment for everyone.

Paul Schrader hated the movie

Among his detractors is a director known as much for his work as for his opinions on other films that he posts on his Facebook page. It’s about Paolo Schraderscreenwriter of Taxi driver and recently director of the excellent The card counter (2021) e Master Gardener (2023), or earlierAmerican gigolo (1980) e The feline (1982). For example, the director had praiseOppenheimercalling it “the most important film of this century”.

Regard Joker 2Paul Schrader was particularly virulent. In the magazine Interviewthe director was outspoken in his belief that it was a “very bad musical“. Worse, he reportedly didn’t bother to watch the entire film and was even offered a break after ten minutes.

I saw 10 or 15 minutes of it. I left, bought something, came back and watched another 10 minutes of it. It was enough.

Paul Schrader then delved a little deeper by explaining that he didn’t like the characters of Joker and Harley Quinn, nor their interpreters (Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga).

I don’t like any of these people. I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them as characters. I don’t like all this. These are people who, if they came to your house, you would run out the back door.

Of course, this time, it is not a developed opinion, but simple feedback following a question asked during an interview. It’s still always funny to hear these kinds of statements from Paul Schrader, who never keeps his tongue in his pocket. And obviously this release will not be the cause of Joker 2’s failure.
