MovieItaly, the classic movie streaming service, launched in North America

MovieItaly, a streaming service aimed at fans of Italian cinema, has launched in North America.

The video-on-demand subscription channel Minerva Pictures of Italy is dedicated to Italian cinema and costs US$7.99 per month, US$19.99 per quarter and US$67.99 per year. “It’s an affordable price for a large part of our audience. It’s not too big, it’s too small,” Gianluca Curti, CEO of Minerva Pictures, told me. the hollywood reporter.

MovieItaly will also release 250 classic and contemporary films with English subtitles and monthly updates with 15 new titles. The streaming platform initially launched in the United States and Canada, as both countries have sizable Italian communities and moviegoers eager to access Italian titles, with Rome-based Curti launching in Toronto.

“There are many movie lovers in North America. We want to attract people who enjoy world cinema,” she added.

MovieItaly is entering the increasingly crowded movie streaming scene as increasingly digital for current and future independent films thanks to the pandemic. Competing classic and contemporary movie streaming services also looking to complement Netflix include The Criterion Channel for $10.99 a month, IFC Films Limited for $5.99 a month, Magnolia Selects for $4.99 and Shudder genre movie service for $5.99 a month.

Curti argued that his streamer would complement larger subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime with extensive libraries and animated content, allowing subscribers to choose the best Italian films from all periods and genres in one collection.

MovieItaly will release classic films from directors Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci and Lina Wertmuller, spaghetti westerns, festival premieres in Venice, Berlin and Cannes, and dramas, action, romantic comedies and contemporary comedies.

Minerva will acquire film titles from partners Movietime, Compass, Filmexport Group, Intramovies, Rewind Film and Film Distribution.
