Dune : a successful franchise for Warner Bros.
With Dune (2021), Denis Villeneuve adapted Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel in spectacular fashion. The film attracted large audiences and grossed more than $407 million worldwide. A score that exploded three years later with Dune 2 (2024)which grossed more than $711 million. Above all, thanks to these two parts, the director managed to tell a complex story and depict a universe that, at first glance, seemed difficult to access for the general public. But the enthusiasm around Dune is there, and Warner Bros. has no intention of stopping.
The series Dune: Prophecywhich will take place 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides and which will focus on the Bene Gesseri, will be released on November 17 on Max. So the studio may consider other films, but without Denis Villeneuve. At least, afterwards Dune 3. Because the director expressed his desire to want to make this feature film and lay the groundwork for a sequel for someone else. The director also mentioned that there is material with other novels by Frank Herbert.
Dune 3, 12 years after the previous work
Denis Villeneuve has yet to conclude a story that remained unresolved at the end of the second work. It showed Paul winning over Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen and then aiming for the stars to continue his “holy war.” For her part, Chani left for the desert towards an unknown destination. Currently being written Dune 3Denis Villeneuve gave important indications about the future during a meeting with Expiration. The story will unfold 12 years after the end of Dune 2 and we will find the main characters facing new challenges. Which is why the director sees this third work as a completely new film rather than a third part (like the novel Duna: Messiah).
I think it would be a great idea to do something completely different. The story takes place 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part 2. Shoot in 2026?
Dune 3 will also and above all allow”concluding the Paul Atreides story arc“. A real conclusion is therefore expected for the main protagonist. As for the casting, if all goes well, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy will be present. For this, the artists will have to keep some space in their diaries for a recovery that it could happen in 2026. Denis Villeneuve recalled his desire to take a break afterwards Dune 2but according to him he could”getting back behind the camera quicker (than he thought).“. Then, without much conviction, he suggested that 2026 could be expected to start production.
These films take a long time to make, so it’s best not to say out loud when I might make them. Unfortunately, I should keep quiet.
Besides Dune 3Denis Villeneuve would have another film project, Nuclear war: a scenario. Let’s see if he can do it before returning to the science fiction saga. But it seems more likely that he will postpone.
