The abbreviation FMD stands for Fast Mimicking Diet and translates to “a diet that mimics starvation”.

Recently, nutritionists have noted that various fasting methods have become more popular than the well-known keto diet. Foot-and-mouth disease differs from the traditional “not eating” – it is just an illusion of the absence of food, which does not carry risks, but forces the body to mobilize its resources.

How was the FMD diet born?

The FMD diet was developed by biogerontologist and cell biologist Walter Longo of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles. Somehow he learned that his colleague, the famous nutritionist Ray Lotford, was doing various experiments, during which he exhausted himself. So Longo thought: is it possible to create a nutrition system in which a person will get all the benefits of fasting, but avoid the drawbacks?

After 10 years of work, the biologist has patented his nutritional system, which forces the body to operate in starvation mode, but at the same time provides enough food to maintain metabolic balance. Longo’s research partners included major organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, one of the largest private medical and research centers in the world, and the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center.

What is the foot and mouth disease diet?

The essence of the diet is that within five days the daily caloric content of the diet should be limited to 34-54%. This not only helps you lose weight, but also kick-starts cell regeneration, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduces markers of inflammation, and slows the aging process. After five days, you can resume your usual diet. Longo advises ordinary people to repeat the diet every three months, athletes – once every six months, and overweight people – once a month.

The FMD diet involves not only cutting calories, but also switching to certain foods: you should minimize the amount of protein and increase the amount of vegetable fats. Carbs should come primarily from vegetables, not bread or cereal. One more day should be taken for the transition period: on this day you should not eat anything high in calories and begin to return to your usual diet, for example, with cereals.

Breakfast: 70 grams of avocado, which can be seasoned to taste with salt and pepper.

Having dinner: half a cup of boiled barley and salad – half a cup of spinach, 10 almonds, 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil, a teaspoon of walnut oil.

Having dinner: 100 grams of boiled lentils and salad – half a green apple, half a glass of broccoli, a teaspoon of nut butter.

During the day you need to drink two liters of water with lemon juice. A cup of black coffee without milk or sugar is acceptable.
