The world of the Dumas family continues in cinema
After the success of recent adaptations of Alexandre Dumas’ novels, The Three Musketeers AND The Count of Monte Cristo, (which has just passed the threshold of nine million spectators), a new film project linked to the Dumas family has been announced. Unlike previous films, this new production will not be adapted from a novel by the writer, but will tell the life of his father, Thomas Alexandre Dumas. Titled Dumas – Black Devilthis film directed by Ladj Ly (The Miserables) will focus on the journey of the first black general of the French army, a fascinating and little-known historical figure.
Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie Dumas, better known as General Dumas, was born a slave in 1762 in the Caribbean, before becoming the first black general of the French army during the Revolution. This historical character with an exceptional career, who remained in the shadows for a long time, will finally have the right to an adaptation on the big screen.
The film, titled Dumas – Black Devilit is a free adaptation of the comic The first Dumawritten by Salva Rubio and illustrated by Ruben del Rincón, and published by Glénat. The comic tells the story of the rise of Dumas, who became a legend of the French Revolution and a fervent defender of human rights.
Ladj Ly, a director passionate about this story, spoke about this project: “I was immediately fascinated by the story of Dumas, the first black general of the French army. I look forward to adapting this story for the big screen, which will reveal a forgotten part of our history.”
Filming is scheduled for 2025
The production of Dumas – Black Devil is the result of a collaboration between several major French production companies: Pathé, Chapter 2 (Mediawan) and Srab Films (Asacha Media). We were already partners in the first two productions The Three Musketeers AND Monte Cristo.
Dimitri Rassam, founder of Chapter 2, expressed his enthusiasm for this project. He explains that he discovered the story of General Dumas by chance while delving into the work of Alexandre Dumas, and that he was surprised that this character was so little known. For him, Ladj Ly is “the ideal director to bring to life this rich and complex story, which reflects not only the skill of General Dumas, but also social dynamics of the revolutionary and post-revolutionary era.
The filming of Dumas – Black Devil is scheduled for summer 2025. Tackling the story of this forgotten hero, the film promises to immerse audiences in a fascinating epic through the French Revolution, paying homage to a man whose life inspired some of the greatest literary works of his son, Alexandre. Dumas. This project is the continuation of the successful adaptations of Three Musketeers and of Count of Monte Cristoand enriches the cinematic heritage around the Dumas family.
