Penn Badgley appears to have mastered the delicate balance of playing Joe Goldberg the shocking Netflix series You . Joe is an obsessive stalker with huge trust and abandonment issues that he kills in the name of “love” and in a way we still support him. So it’s no surprise that there is talk on set about making sure Badgley has the right tone when he plays the lead role. However, given the character’s actions, this apparently led to some pretty crazy ratings from his directors, especially when it came to Joe’s masturbation scenes.
The Gossip Girl alum has opened her podcast crushed (opens in a new tab) on the evaluation he tends to receive from directors when he plays one of the self-gratifying stalker scenes. Where it might be thought that an actor should be encouraged to pretend to enjoy a show in public that will be seen by millions of people, Penn Badgley said he is actually being asked to ease the goosebumps. The actor revealed:
I think that every time I’ve done a masturbation scene, which means at least one every season so far, I’ve always had the note to make it less scary. They say, ‘Close your eyes or go faster or go slower.’ I’m like, ‘What? This man kills people and masturbates on the street. Are you saying that I make it scary? How am I the one that makes it scary?
I mean touched, in this response, is it masturbation scary, or is it the fact that Joe doesn’t have the self-control not to put one out in the bushes while chasing his latest obsession? Scary because his eyes are open, or scary because he imprisons people in a glass cage in the basement of a library and kills them?
Penn Badgley specifically recalled that in the first season, director Lee Toland Krieger kindly tried to push him in a different direction when the actor refused to close his eyes during filming. What stage. In Badgley’s words:
I just remember that I didn’t close my eyes and the director walked over, and it was Lee Toland Krieger, I hope he hears it and laughs. It was like, ‘Dude, I think you need to close your eyes.’
It’s actually pretty funny to imagine the directors giving Penn Badgley such specific instructions on how to indulge in less scary ways, especially considering the actor turned down the rating. Being scary was the whole point of the character, he supported him!
We will have to see if and how Joe’s voyeuristic ways have evolved when You returns to Netflix for season 4. Later Joe faked his death in an alleged murder / suicide , the stalker escaped from Mother Linda in Northern California at the end of season three, ostensibly to search for Marienne in Paris. However, it appears that Joe is enjoying a full European vacation, like the next season will take place in London .
Filming began in March 2022, so while we await updates on when we can expect to see Season 4, you can catch up (or review) the first three seasons with a netflix subscription . Be sure to check out these others too shows and movies to watch if you wish You and if it’s the actor who brings you back, take a look what to see if you like Penn Badgley .
