Pink loves a challenge, and on her new protest single “Irrelevant,” she takes on anyone who dares to feel invisible or powerless.
“You can call me irrelevant, unimportant / You can try to make me small / I’ll be your heretic, hypocrite, I won’t think of you at all / Sticks and stones and all that / Does Jesus love the ignorant? / I like to think he’d be happy to take all of us,” he sings. A song about a terrible group.
Proceeds from the track, which was released Thursday, will go to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan Get Out the Vote initiative When We All Vote. The defiant chorus features a rendition of the iconic song from The Who’s 1965 debut album, “The Kids Are Alright”, with the upbeat warning: “The kids is not okay / None of us are well / I’m tired but I will’ don’t sleep tonight.” / Because I still don’t feel alive / The children are not well (not well).
It also echoes another iconic song on the final bridge, Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 feminist anthem “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, when Pink sings “Girls just want to have rights/ So what do we have to fight for?”
As if the message wasn’t clear enough, the single’s artwork is a blurry photo of the singer happily winking her middle finger. This marks the first time Pink has collaborated on a song with Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Ian Phychuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris).
In a statement about the song, Pink explained, “As a woman who has an opinion and isn’t afraid to say it, it’s very exhausting when the only response I get is how inadequate I am. I am relevant because I exist and because I am human. Nobody is irrelevant. And no one can take my vote away from me.” When We All Vote’s mission is to increase turnout with each election cycle and change the culture of voting.
Earlier in the week, Pink teased the song in a 16-second video post titled “irrelevant #shutupandsing #challengeaccepted” in which she looked directly into the camera closely and kissed what is part of the chorus. On Tuesday, she revealed, “Wake up. It got hot. wrote a song. Coming Soon” along with what appear to be handwritten lyrics for the new song.
