Gabriel, the worst character in Emily in Paris?
In the first season ofEmily in Pariswe understood very well why Emily had fallen under the spell of Gabriel, her neighbor, played by Lucas Bravo. Friendly, funny, handsome and a good cook, he had what it took to seduce her (well, except for the fact that he was already in a relationship with someone else).
But over the course of the seasons, Gabriel has become, let’s not fear the words, a big idiot. So much so that we had trouble understanding why Emily chose him over Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), at the end of season 3. And the confirmation of his (very) bad choice was not long in coming because in season 4, Gabriel behaved like an asshole, abandoning her on a ski slope in Megève, even though he didn’t know skiing (well, she met Marcello, it’s a blessing in disguise).
The writing of Gabriel’s character has disintegrated over the seasonsEmily in Parisand fans of the series aren’t the only ones who realize this. Lucas Bravo himself can no longer tolerate the slow degradation of this character, who has nevertheless been an asset to the Netflix show.
“Gabriel turns into guacamole”
In an interview given to IndieWire on the occasion of the film’s release Free by Mélanie Laurent (November 1 on Prime Video), in which he plays the robber Bruno Sulak, Lucas Bravo does not mince words about the way in which the character of Gabriel has been trashed over the seasons.
She said: “The ‘sexy boss’ was very present in me in the first season, but as the seasons went on, we grew apart because of the choices they forced on him.” He noted his frustration with Gabriel’s transformation, who has become “unaware of his surroundings, always a victim and completely lost”. This development made filming less fun for him, as he thought disconnected from a character that he liked to play. He also added, with a touch of bitter humor, that he saw his character transform into “guacamole”, a metaphor to illustrate his slow degradation.
Regarding his commitment to the series, he added: “I wonder if I want to be part of season 5… because my contract expires with season 4.” Bravo expressed a desire to see Gabriel return to his “funny, mischievous, lively” side, noting that “for three seasons of playing a melancholy, sad, depressed character, he’s not funny anymore.”
He also spoke about the difficulty of making his suggestions heard on set: “I tried to add nuances, but we don’t have much freedom on set.” He clarified that Netflix and the production were probably reluctant to change the formula that had worked well initially: “They are very careful not to change the recipe and keep it as it was.”
Bravo concluded by stating his love for the show and its actors, while expressing his frustration with the direction his character was taking. He remains optimistic and curious to see where this will lead: “The series is not over.”
