A disturbing horror drama
In September 2024 the film was released in theaters Don’t speak badlyhorror drama directed by James McAvoy and remake of the Danish film of the same name, released in 2022. As scary as it is funny, the Don’t speak badly The American version tells the same story as the Danish film: a family spends a weekend with their new friends, a weekend that quickly turns into a nightmare when these new friends turn out to be very malicious… The confrontation between the two families culminates in a final climax where the guests escape the fate their “friends” had in store for them.
But in the Danish version, the original one, the ending is very different. And if we can talk about a happy ending for the American film, end of Don’t speak badly The Dane overcomes the terror everything that can be sanely imagined and leaves a very long-lasting traumatic effect.
In Don’t speak badlya couple consumed by monotony and insecurity meet during their Italian holidays, with their daughter Agnes, another couple. This other couple has a boyfriend, Abel, suffering from a oral malformation which prevents him from speaking clearly. This couple, unlike the “protagonist” couple of the film, appears satisfied, cheerful, very friendly and warm. Some time after their meeting, this friendly couple invites the other couple and their daughter to spend a weekend with them (in England in the American version, in the Netherlands in the Danish version).
A not so nice weekend (SPOILER)
Once they arrive at their destination, the newlyweds will realize that something is wrong with their guests. Nice during the holidays, these new friends then become more confrontational, sometimes aggressive and very harsh with their boyfriend. Embarrassed, stressed and restless, the invited spouses pretend several times to leave but, undecided, he constantly delays his departure.
In reality, the hosts of this terrible weekend have a Machiavellian plan: invite the couple and their daughter, kill the parents and keep the daughter they are about to leave behind. cut off the tongue. We then understand that this couple made up of two psychopaths has a modus operandi diabolical: inviting a couple with a small child into your home, killing the parents and replacing the child – already the child of a previous couple – with your own… Cutting out his tongue and kidnapping him so that he doesn’t run away or say anything.
In the American version, the invited couple realizes the trap, manages to kill the attackers and escape unharmed, also saving the mutilated and kidnapped boy. In the original film, directed by Christian Tafdrup, it is exactly the opposite…
“Because you let us”
The end of Don’t speak badly 2022 is terrible, since I am the bad guys who winand that they win completely. In this film, Bjørn and Louise, the guest couple, realize too late that they are threatened. They flee, but get stuck with the car on a dirt road. At this moment Patrick arrives and, under the pretext of helping them, takes them prisoner. There, he cuts out the daughter’s tongue. He then leads his parents to an old quarry where, together with his partner Karin, after having drowned the boy they had passed off as their son, they order Bjørn and Louise to undress. These are executed. Patrick and Karin, who are neglecting them, then grab the stones and stone them to death.
Shortly afterwards we find Patrick and Karin, on holiday, with Bjørn and Louise’s daughter in the back seat of their car. Ready to start their terrible crime again…
The end of all this Don’t speak badly it is traumatic for two reasons. First of all because it is the criminals who achieve their goals, unharmed and unconcerned. Or a totally immoral decision in the tradition of fiction. This ending is terrible because all the “good” characters are killed or are about to be killed, and in a very surprising way.
Then, traumatic because it is not so much Patrick and Karin’s effort to kill that we remember. Indeed, these appear to act minimumleaving Bjørn and Louise due to their indecision in closing the trap on themselves. That is to say, we don’t even see much of Patrick and Karin’s action inaction of Bjørn and Louise to protect themselves.
This intention is made clear by a line of dialogue from Patrick. Indeed, when Bjørn asks him why they do this to him, Patrick replies laconically: “Because you let us.“
Don’t speak badlywhen the fault lies with “good men”
In addition to the dark and realistic staging of Don’t speak badlyof its gradually loosened tension and its incessant and growing discomfort, it is this fundamental idea that it turns into total terror. In a certain way, if Christian Tafdrup wants to express something, it is the meaning of the quote attributed to the English philosopher John Stuart Mill :
The only thing that allows evil to triumph is the inertia of good men.
The blame is therefore not attributed to the couple of murderers but to the couple of victims. And that’s what ends it Don’t speak badly so unforgettable and so deeply traumatic.
