Arcana on Netflix: season 2 available after three years of waiting
Knowing how to take your time can be a good thing. This is what has been demonstrated Arcanathe Netflix animated series derived from the video game League of Legendswhose development lasted almost a decade. In 2016, Riot Games and Fortiche Production joined forces to bring it to life Jinx and Vi’s adventuretwo sisters who lived in Zaun, in the slums of the wealthy city of Piltover. After years of development, the first season launched in November 2021. A first flurry of episodes that convinced the public and the press.
In addition to the gripping plot, Arcana impressed by its semi-realistic animationalternating 2D and 3D sequences, and capable of capturing the emotion of its characters as well as offering dynamic action sequences. Not forgetting some visual variations for clip-like sequences. Season 1 ofArcana thus laid the groundwork, advancing the plot significantly – the ellipses advance the story several years – and offering significant twists (Jayce’s disappearance).
The first nine episodes cost $80 million to produce. Riot Games has added about 100 million more for the production of the second season, several American media have announced. Adding to this the promotional costs, Arcana it would therefore currently be the most expensive animated series in history. So much so that demand increased around the second chapter, which finally arrives on Netflix after three years of waiting.
Jinx increasingly humanized
Arcana Season 2 begins in continuity with previous events. Even though time has passed, quick flashbacks recall Jinx’s devastating action when, at the end of the first season, she launched a missile at the members of the Piltover council. An act that will a little further away from his sister Viand allow Caitlyn to take on more prominence this season, just like Ambessa.
However, Arcane’s primary interest remains this relationship between rival sisters who constantly cross paths and clash. If in our opinion the path that Vi takes is not the most appreciable, it remains coherent. On the other hand, Jinx, long shown as a crazy and impulsive boy, becomes more and more touching during the episodes. At least during the first two parts (6 episodes) which were made available to the press. The addition of a new character to his side helps maintain his humanity, much like his primary desire to not lead a revolution. Because it is against his will that he will become the face of Zaun’s resistance.
A new visual slap
From a visual point of view, Arcana season 2 also remains close to what was proposed three years earlier. However, the Fortiche Production teams have been able to renew themselves several times. As in this falsely titanic fight between two immense creatures commented by Jinx. Also worth highlighting is the explosion of colours, the use of slow motion and camera movements which avoid being indigestible.
So even though several years have passed between the two seasons ofArcanayou don’t have the impression of having two different or too technically distant shows. Consequentially a work that works perfectly as a whole and which, limiting itself to two seasons, often gets straight to the point without unnecessary deviations. However, part of the story remains rather vague: it concerns the gem that enabled a technological leap in Piltover. But for this we will still have a third part to discover.
Arcana the second season will be available on Netflix from November 9th. Part 2 will be released online on November 16th and Part 3 on November 23rd.
