Tonight on TV: a chilling film about school bullying

Un Monde: an intimate thriller about school bullying

In One worldBelgian director Laura Wandel takes us into the heart of the schoolyard, this sometimes ruthless space where children discover the rules of society in their own, often brutal, way. The film follows Nora (played by the young and talented Maya Vanderbeque), a little girl who enters elementary school and has to deal with harassment from her older brother. Through his gaze, the viewer discovers the complexity of social relationships at this age, where cruelty and innocence coexist.

Shot mostly from a child’s height, One world creates total immersion in Nora’s daily life. The scenes take place almost exclusively on the playground, a courageous choice that highlights the little girl’s feelings of isolation, fear and confusion. This minimalist yet powerful staging captures emotion without artifice, making the viewer’s experience deeply visceral.

A sober and impactful approach to harassment

One world tackles the difficult topic of school bullying with great modesty, without ever lapsing into sensationalism. Laura Wandel focuses on the psychological impact of this daily violence and shows how Nora tries to juggle between the desire to protect her brother and the fear of being ostracized herself. The film reminds us that the schoolyard, although often perceived as an innocent space, is also a place where dynamics of power, domination and suffering are formed.

The young Maya Vanderbeque, in the role of Nora, offers a moving performance of rare authenticity. With her discreet but touching expressions, she perfectly embodies the vulnerability and resilience of a little girl dealing with an adult world that she does not yet understand. Laura Wandel’s production, intimate and precise, highlights this performance without ever diverting attention from the essential.
