ESPN+ will increase its monthly and annual subscription prices starting in August, marking the second price increase for the Disney-owned service in the past year, a company spokeswoman confirmed Friday.
Starting August 23, ESPN+ will be $9.99 per month and $99.99 per year, up from the current price of $6.99 per month and $69.99 per year. The subscription service last raised its prices in August 2021 in smaller increments, from $5.99 a month to $59.99 at its current price.
The Disney package, which starts at $13.99 a month for Disney+, Hulu with ads, and ESPN+, will remain the same price. UFC pay-per-view events will also remain unchanged.
The regular rise in the subscription price is, in some ways, to be expected at Disney as the company tries to increase streaming revenue after attracting customers with lower prices following the initial launch of Disney+ and ESPN+.
Disney executives also hinted at plans to move its linear channel from ESPN direct to consumer, though Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said “it doesn’t make sense to transfer all these linear rights” to ESPN+. it is today, especially “at the price it is now”.
Last April, ESPN+ had 22.3 million subscribers. The service has the lowest average monthly revenue per user at $4.73, compared to $6.32 for Disney+ (in the US and Canada) and $12.77 for Hulu per ad.
Disney also continued to invest in expanded rights to major leagues such as the NFL, NHL, PGA and major events such as Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
