A Little Mermaid who has nothing magical about her
This is not a Disney production,” Lionsgate said The Little Mermaid a serious stroke of darkness. This horrific version is scheduled for digital release on December 17, 2024 and the least we can say is that this siren is not the one we all saw singing under the sea with an “R” rating for violence, language and nudity , we are far from the colorful and joyful universe of Disney fairy tales.
The film follows, directed by Leigh Scott Dr. Eric Prince, an archaeologist who explored the Caribbean waters with his studentswhere they discover an ancient pagan temple. There, Eric falls under the spell of a mysterious mermaid-like aquatic creature, and things begin to turn to the dark side. Soon, this relationship, which seemed like a simple marine romance, turns into a dive into a terrifying underwater world. Eric will then have to choose between what he believes to be “true love” and… the destruction of humanity.
A playground for horror directors
With Andersen’s original tale, published in 1837, now in the public domain, there are no limits to horror filmmakers’ exploration of the darker aspects of this classic story. It seems that every cult film or character is now an open door for terrifyingly reimagined versions, and the directors are enjoying it. After all, why settle for fairy tale innocence when you can add a few monsters and a healthy dose of emotion?
While the horror version of The Little Mermaid will be released in the United States in December, no French date has been announced.
