Tom Cruise at the center of a crazy rumor: was he deceived on the set of his new film?

A replacement for Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise is a machine. At 62, he runs, jumps, rolls, climbs and hangs from planes as if nothing had happened. However, a much less heroic anecdote could be added to his legend: according to a rumor reported by The mirror, the actor (and producer) would use a stunt double for a scene in Mission Impossible: The Final Showdown in which his character, Ethan Hunt, must… turn the pages of a book. The reason? Avoid a cut to your finger.

If the story makes you smile, an “insider” would have explained that this choice would also have been motivated by the tiredness of the actor, already overworked after years of working on the franchise and other blockbusters. But we can legitimately ask ourselves: would Tom Cruise, the man who rides burning motorcycles, really need a stunt double for such an unlikely scene?

Finally a sign of humanity?

Tom Cruise is known for his perfectionism. Not only does he perform most of his own stunts, but he is also the producer of the franchise Mission: impossible. Christopher McQuarrie, the director, previously explained that one of the challenges of filming was to demonstrate in every frame that it is really Tom Cruise on the screen and not a stunt double. Thus, a simple task like turning a page almost seems like an “anti-stunt” in a film where every scene aims to push the limits (we still remember his motorcycle jump in the seventh film).

However, this small moment of vulnerability, real or exaggerated, could reflect something else: the weight of the years. For decades, Tom Cruise has carried one of the most physically and mentally demanding franchises on his shoulders. And even heroes need a break. After all, it has reportedly invested millions of dollars of its own money to allow production to continue during the pandemic. So if a replacement turned the corner for him, wouldn’t it just be a nod to his humanity, well deserved after so much effort?

Mission Impossible: The Final Showdown will be available in theaters in May 2025.
