Sean Murphy, former head of television at Warner Bros Australia, announced on Wednesday that he would launch film and television production company Big Owl Pictures. Based in Sydney, Australia, the firm received support from the private equity group Balance Vector.
Murphy will serve as executive director and executive producer of the new team. According to him, Big Owl Pictures aims to develop and produce non-scripted content of all genres, in addition to selected screenplays and film projects. The company is expected to announce the executive team and first project plan in the coming months.
Balance Vector is the private equity firm of Steve Luzzo, former CEO of hard drive giant Seagate Technology. The group is involved in investments in technology and environment, real estate development, sports property, music, television and film production. Balance Vector acquired a stake in Big Owl, with Luzzo acting as lead consultant.
Murphy previously spent three years as an executive producer for Shine Australia. At Warners, he was responsible for executing The Masked Singer, The Bachelorette, First Dates, How You Think You Are, Back in Time for Dinner, Celebrity Apprentice, The Bachelorette, Little Big Cats, Dancing with the Stars and other titles.
