Johnny Hallyday: one of the two planned biopics is cancelled

A rivalry interrupted between two projects

In recent years, big-name biopics have often generated tension, and Johnny Hallyday hasn’t escaped this rule. Two competing projects were originally in development, each offering a distinct take on the life of the Tauliers.

The first, entitled Phoenix and entrusted to Jalil Lespert, it was supposed to highlight the meeting between Johnny and Laeticia in the mid-90s. Matthias Schoenaerts had been chosen to play the rocker and the film promised to move towards an intimate and universal love story. Announced last May during the Cannes Film Festival, the project seemed to be well underway, but in the end it was cancelled, as Laura Smet confirmed in an interview with Paris match (go AlloCiné).

“Only one remains, Jalil Lespert’s film will not be made. Only Cédric Jimenez’s film remains with Raphaël Quenard, who contacted me to discuss it”, declared the singer’s daughter. While the reasons for this abandonment remain unclear, this decision puts an end to the “biopic war” that could have divided fans.

Johnny: a single film to celebrate the legend

With the cancellation of Phoenixall eyes are now on the biopic directed by Cédric Jimenez (BAC North), with a sober title Johnny. This film, supported by Laeticia Hallyday and produced by Hugo Sélignac, promises a different approach. Rather than focus on a specific period, it will explore different aspects of Johnny Hallyday’s lifemixing intimate moments and significant events.

The plot will revolve around 2008, when the Hallyday couple adopted their daughter Joy, integrating flashbacks to the singer’s youth. Raphaël Quenard, chosen to play the rocker, will perform some of Johnny’s legendary songs himself, thus offering a show that is both cinematic and musical.

The theatrical release is scheduled for December 8, 2027a symbolic date marking ten years since the passing of Johnny Hallyday, this biopic aims to celebrate the legend while providing an authentic look into his life.
