Popular adaptations on the small screen
Just as in the case of Stephen King, the subject is the works of George RR Martin Hollywood adaptations. After adaptation game of Thrones television, especially HBO, has been transposing it onto the screen for almost ten years House of the Dragon. THE the spectators are there and the success of the spin-off brought forward by Milly Alcock and Matt Smith reflects the ever-present interest in its author’s universe.
Except George RR Martin doesn’t necessarily like this. Indeed, despite all this success, the American writer does not seem conquered the various adaptations of his novels on the small screen. And not just his novels! He made it known loud and clear in the columns of The Hollywood journalist.
George RR Martin attacks Hollywood and its less than faithful adaptations of literary works
This isn’t the first time this has happened George RR Martin openly criticizes television adaptations of literary works. According to him, the changes made by the screenwriters they don’t necessarily improve the story and often distances himself from it:
Maybe I’m one of the few people in Hollywood who still thinks that when you adapt a work of art, a novel, a short story, you have to do a faithful adaptation. This bothers me too much because they change things and I don’t think they improve them in general
The man nicknamed the “American Tolkien” had already expressed himself on the subject in a post published on his blog, Not a blogat the beginning of the year. According to George RR Martin, the authors of films and series do not they never manage to adequately adapt a work. They would do even worse:
“ No matter how good a writer is, no matter how good the book, there always seems to be someone who thinks they can do better, eager to take the story and “improve” it and then take ownership of it. However, they never make it better. Nine hundred and ninety-nine times out of a thousand they make things worse », he wrote.
George RR Martin is still writing The winds of winter, the sixth volume of the saga game of Thrones.
