A French youth comedy
Directed by Bastien Milheau, Super padded is part of the lineage of teen comedies, somewhere between Supervillain and the disappointments of schoolchildren made in France. The film follows Janus (Pierre Gommé) and Sam (Néo Broca), two inseparable high school students whose mission is to bring drinks to an end-of-year party. But their plan quickly turns into chaos when they find a strange machine in Janus’ father’s basement.
With an absurd tone and sometimes bordering on humor, the film is aimed at a young audience, eager for uninhibited stories. Although its crazy concept has caught the attention of some, Super padded was not as successful as expected upon its release.
When it was released on August 30, 2023, the film was recorded 61,676 entries in French cinemas. A modest score that is partly explained by the strong competition: in the same week, blockbusters are popular Equalizer 3 and award-winning films such asAnatomy of a fall dominated the box office. The public, visibly unconvinced by the trailer and the concept, preferred to ignore this promising comedy.
A rebirth on Netflix
If Super padded struggled to establish itself in theaters, its arrival on Netflix on November 30, 2023, completely changed the situation. Within a few days the film achieved success second place for the most viewed films on the platform in France. This unexpected success demonstrates once again the power of streaming platforms to give new life to films that have gone unnoticed in traditional circuits.
Several factors may explain this renewed interest. First of all, the context: on Netflix the public is more inclined to try light films without investing in a cinema ticket. Thus, the film’s absurd humor finds its best place in home viewing, where it is often consumed with friends or family, in a more relaxed setting.
Finally, buddy films, while sometimes struggling to attract moviegoers to theaters, often benefit from positive word of mouth once available for streaming. Super paddedwith its offbeat tone and unlikely situations, it seems to have found its audience.
