Catherine Zeta-Jones shared emotional memories about her Oscar win during a conversation on Red Sea Film Festivalin Saudi Arabia, this Friday (December 6). The actress, who won Best Supporting Actress in 2003 for her role as Velma Kelly in the musical Chicago (2002), described the moment as surprising: “The Oscar was something totally unexpected. It left me speechless”she told the audience, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Being recognized by the lights of Broadway was wonderful. This changed my life.

At the time of her win, Zeta-Jones was pregnant with her daughter and took the Academy Awards stage just 10 days before giving birth.

21 years ago! Ten days earlier, I had a baby and an Oscar.

The musical Chicagodirected by RobMarshall, also starred Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart, she won six Oscars, including Best Picture, and helped revive the musical genre in contemporary cinema.

The actress revealed that the role was a milestone in her career, something that required a combination of her dancing, singing and acting skills. With years of tap training since childhood and a solid background in musical theater, Catherine found in Chicago an opportunity to shine.

I also started in theater very young. I’m certainly not a young girl. I have been in the industry for a long time and have loved every minute of it.

The whole rehearsal process, when you think about the screen, all the different angles we had to take for those routines, that collaboration with dancers who felt like I spoke their language, was wonderful.

Zeta-Jones also highlighted the difference between the theater stage and the film set. “The rehearsal process and thinking about different camera angles was a wonderful collaboration. Working with dancers who understand my language was incredible”he explained.
