Production set in the Star Wars universe was interrupted because ratings and public approval were considered unsatisfactory
Representatives of Disney they once again commented on the cancellation of the series The Acolyte, production set in the universe Star Wars which was interrupted about two months after the first season premiered in June 2024.
This decision would have been taken because the audience and public approval were considered unsatisfactory, even with a good review from critics.
Alan Bergmanco-president of Disney Entertainment, spoke to the portal Vulture (via NME) and gave more details about the measure. He explained that the company was satisfied with the performance of the first season of The Acolyte. However, it was not enough to justify the production of a sequel, especially considering the high costs involved.
We were happy with our performance, but we weren’t where we needed to be to receive the structural cost and pursue a second season.”
No Surprises
Shortly after the cancellation, the protagonist Amandla Stenbergwho plays the twins Osha and Mothershared her opinion on the end of the series on social media.
The actress published a sequence of stories on Instagram to comment on the end of the spin-off of Star Wars. According to her, the decision was not a surprise:
I’ll be transparent and say it wasn’t shocking. There has been a wave of criticism since the series was announced, when it was still just an idea and no one had watched anything. That’s when we suffered a wave of, I would say, a wave of ultra-conservative intolerance, prejudice and hatred.”
Amandla Stenberg referred to the various criticisms that the series received even before its release. Many fans questioned the cast and accused the Disney of giving in to the “woke” culture, as several actors from The Acolyte are black or Asian.
On the other hand, the protagonist thanked the many other fans who supported her and praised the series. In the end, she said she was “really affected” by the insults, but managed to give a response.
Although I predicted [o ódio e a reação negativa]it’s not something you can fully understand until it happens to you. But I feel like I overcame it in a lot of ways, including standing up and being myself.”
