To South Korean journalists, Hwang Dong-hyuk said that ‘seeing reality gradually becoming more similar to the series was scary and sad’

Creator and director of Round 6, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that the second season of the hit series Netflix has parallels with the current political situation in South Korea, which is experiencing several internal turbulences.

In an interview with local reporters in Jongno-gu district in central Seoul, Dong-hyuk spoke about political polarization in the country and impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeolcurrently criminally investigated for insurrection due to the failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3, 2024. The information is from Korea JoongAng Daily.

“I heard on the news that impeachment supporters and opponents almost got into a fight, and in the end the police had to draw a line between them with barricades. That gave me goosebumps because it was a lot like Round 6, where people are divided by a line between O and X,” the artist told the press.

“I wanted to reflect this kind of phenomenon in the story, but seeing reality gradually becoming more similar to the series was scary and sad,” he continued Hwang Dong-hyukwho called the South Korean president’s impeachment a “critical moment.”

Finally, the director spoke about the intention with Round 6: “Asking whether the system of deciding everything through single-vote majority rule is really the right approach in a country like Korea, which operates under an imperial-style presidential system, and whether there are different alternatives.”

What is the story of Round 6?

In Round 6456 people in an emergency situation, who urgently need money, receive a mysterious invitation to join a mysterious game. Those who respond to the invitation are locked in a secret location, where they play children’s games to earn 45.6 billion won (the series’ currency). However, the consequence of losing is no child’s play and results in the death of the participants.

In the second year, three years after winning the Lula Game, Player 456 remains firm in his purpose of discovering who is behind the competition to put an end to the cruel scheme and now has money to finance his search.

Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) starts in the most obvious places, looking for the man in a suit who proposed a game to him on the subway platform. As he begins to obtain results in his searches, he realizes that his fight against the organization will be more deadly than he imagined: to end the game, he will need to participate in it again.
