Filming the feature film was very special for Guillaume Canet. In fact, Christian Carion wanted a totally immersive system for the actor, who was not allowed to read the script or talk to the film crew. He therefore knew nothing about the unfolding of the story during the six days of chronological filming and had to improvise his scenes. A peculiarity that meant that part of the ending of the film remained inexplicable…
My Boy ending explained: who kidnapped the children?
The end of My boyfriend can frustrate viewers. Indeed, no explanation is given for the child abductions. Still, an explanation was clearly present in the scenarioas Christian Carion confided:
There were no gray areas in the script. The explanation was given during the torture scene in the garage.
However, as Guillaume Canet was present constant improvisationit was not possible to provide the information:
Since we were biased against trying, Guillaume didn’t know that the actor in front of him would have to provide this information. At the end of the scene, when Guillaume went to get the chain to hit him, for me it was a death sentence. But I didn’t ask him, I didn’t know what he would do, and neither did the actor tied to the car. Guillaume is back and I swear that the chain shot landed 3 cm from the actor’s head! Guillaume was therefore in a moment of madness that did not allow the suffering actor to provide this famous information!
Evil for good?
After the cinema release of My boyfriendChristian Carion felt this ending was much better than what he had imagined:
Today I tell myself that it’s much better this way, that in the end it’s even scarier not to really know. I’ve had a few screenings where people have said amazing things to me. Some saw that there was child trafficking, others didn’t. It does not matter! A friend told me: “It is above all the story of a man who becomes a father”. I hadn’t thought about it but this sentence is super precise. Now that you told me it’s obvious! I thought of this phrase while watching the final scene: there are three of them, they play frisbee, Guillaume talks to his son… The character has finally found his place, and even if he goes to prison, it doesn’t matter. That’s not the problem, there is something more important: he has taken a place that he did not occupy before. So yes, it’s the story of a man who becomes a father and who went through terrible trials that ultimately made him an adult.
