Originally, the character played by Steve Toussaint is white in the work of George RR Martin
Steve Toussaint revealed the racist attacks he suffered on social media after being chosen to play an originally white character in the books. The actor will play Lord Corlys Velaryonalso known as The Sea Snakea descendant of Old Valyria and one of the wealthiest men in Westeros.
In the series, during the Dance of the Dragons, the character of Toussaint became Hand of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe actor still points out that, despite being a fantasy, the work of George RR Martin still reflects the real world.
“I didn’t realize that [estar no elenco] It was a big deal until I experienced racism on social media. Yeah, that shit happened. I was like, ‘Oh wow,’ and then I thought, ‘Okay, so this means a lot to some people, but I can’t let that bother me.
“I loved game of Thrones (2011), but my only caveat was, ‘Where are the others in this world? ‘Cause the world that Martin created is diverse if you look [para além de Westeros]and I think this series comes close to that.
Despite the directors Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have thought of a more diverse cast for the spin-off of the plot of HBO MaxToussaint’s character is one of the few black protagonists in the production.
