For more than two decades, scientists conducted a large-scale study with a group of people with a strong predisposition to oncology and came to the conclusion that the beneficial effect of eating this fruit is difficult to replace with anything.

Lynch syndrome is a disease associated with inherited genetic mutations. Oncologists have long established that people with a similar diagnosis are very likely to develop a number of cancerous tumors. Especially in the area of ​​the gastrointestinal tract.

In 1999, British scientists brought together a group of 1,000 people with Lynch syndrome and began studying how their condition was affected by a diet high in resistant (resistant) starch, a substance that improves digestion. There is a lot of this starch in unripe fruits. But most importantly – in green bananas.

For two years, scientists gave half of the people in the experimental group resistant starch equal to its content in an unripe banana. The other group received a placebo, and in the end the experiment did not give encouraging results. However, scientists continued to monitor the patients and years later discovered that the group of people who ate more resistant starch had four times fewer cases of cancer than the placebo group.

“Resistant starch alters bacterial metabolism in the body and reduces the amount of bile acids that affect human DNA. We were impressed with the results: the effect of starch was particularly visible in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. This is very important because cancers of the esophagus, stomach, bile duct and duodenum are very difficult to detect. Usually people learn about it already in the later stages,” explains the one of the authors of the study, nutrition expert Professor Mazzers.

The specialist also clarified that to prevent oncology, it is necessary to eat unripe bananas.

“The starch in bananas actively resists breakdown and reaches the intestines, where it can change the type of bacteria. But in ripe, soft bananas, this substance is less. You can get the daily norm of resistant starch by including whole grains and legumes in the diet,” the expert concluded.
