An unfounded controversy according to creators
AdolescenceFour episodes produced by Philip Barantini and with Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty, tells the dramatic story of the murder of a girl of a 13 year old boy. Although the creators have clearly indicated that the scenario was inspired by various facts that occurred through the United Kingdom without relying on a specific event, a publication on the social network X said that the program represented a form of “anti-white propaganda”. Elon Musk has indirectly transmitted this accusation simply by commenting: “Wow”.
Recently questioned in the podcast “The News Agents” (via Variety), Jack Thorne replied unequivocally, describing these absurd “absurd” accusations. He insisted on the fact that no element of the scenario was taken directly from a true story, highlighting the dangers of enjoying real events on the screen awkward.
A story focused on toxic masculinity, not on the race
Thorne clearly specifies the intentions of the creative team behind Adolescence. He says that the main objective of the series is to explore the complex issues relating to toxic masculinity and adolescent violence and not to transmit a racial discourse. According to him, the representation of the young guilty in the white adolescent allows exactly to avoid any racial stereotype and to insist on the fact that the phenomenon of youth violence is connected to any specific origin.
From its exit, Adolescence It was a huge success on Netflix all over the world, recording over 66 million views in only two weeks. The manufacturer Hannah Walters told Variety that the series raised many positive exchanges, in particular among teenagers who, thanks to the program, managed to approach sensitive arguments with their parents such as the influence of toxic cultures on the internet and the issues related to male identity.
Jack Thorne recalls that the series mainly tries to open the debate on contemporary challenges found by young people, far from the disputes he considers unfounded.
