A reality in the crumbs, an uncertain memory
The story of Total recall Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a frustrated worker of his monotonous life, follows that he decides to be created a memory of the holidays on Mars by the Rekall company. The operation is going wrong. Or not. Because from this moment, the film shakes in an espionage light, Martian rebellion, chase and multiple revelations. Quaid becomes a double agent, liberator of an oppressed colony, married to a woman who no longer recognizes.
But all the elements of this new life correspond exactly to the scenario that Rekall had offered him. What if everything were just a dream? The idea is slipped from the beginning, therefore fueled throughout the film with disturbing details: a doctor who has come to reason, a white light as a conclusion, dialogues that sound like warnings. Verhoeven, far from deciding, plays with the spectator’s expectations and refuses any final response.
A brain success ahead of time
For some time, seen as a simple futuristic action film, the film has gained esteem over the years. His mixture of social satire, technological paranoia and claim makes him a job more evil than it seems. All this is full of a brutal and inventive aesthetic, typical of Verhoeven, already the author of Robocop and future director of Astronavi soldiers.
The end continues to provide dozens of theories, to the point that Total recall It is mentioned today as one of the most ambiguous films of modern science fiction. Its strength lies in this gray area between dream and reality, without ever turning on on one side or the other. Thirty -five years later, nothing is more delicious than getting lost again.
