Power Rangers’ entertainment entertainment says stereotypical lineups were a mistake

Max documentary reveals behind the scenes of the series and raises debate about racial stereotypes in the formation of the original cast

The classic series Power Rangers(1993) returned to the center of discussions with its participation in the program The dark side of Hollywood (Hollywood Demonin the original), available in the catalog of Max. The documentary analyzes behind the scenes and controversy of iconic industry productions, including the cultural and social implications of some creative decisions.

During one of the episodes, the controversy is addressed around the lineup of the characters Zack Taylorthe first black Ranger, played by a black actor (Walter Emanuel Jones), and Trini Kwanthe first yellow ranger, lived by an Asian actress (THUY TRAG). The association between ethnicity and color of costumes generated debate between fans and critics.

Tony Oliverone of the main writers of the first season, commented on the case in the documentary. According to him, the creative team of the time did not intend to reinforce racial stereotypes, but admits that the combination of choices turned out to be a mistake. “None of us were thinking of stereotypes when we made the cast”states in the documentary. “It was only when my assistant pointed out this during a meeting that I realized how problematic it was. It was a mistake.”

He also acknowledges that this type of choice went unnoticed precisely because, at the time, there was no such broad discussion about representativeness and cultural sensitivity in television products aimed at young people. Still, Oliver acknowledges that the impact was lasting that the series was only able to move on for two seasons with this configuration because the implications were not immediately perceived.
