Black Mirror has returned to Netflix
We no longer present the series Black mirror. Created in 2011 by Charlie Broocer, this British anthology has established itself as an important work of contemporary science fiction.
Launched for the first time on Channel 4 before being detected by Netflix from season 3, Black mirror Built on a simple but formidably effective promise: to question the effects of technologies on humanity. BANE: Why does this episode go crazy fans?
The second episode of season 7 of Black mirror “Bane Black” has aroused a strong reaction between spectators due to an intriguing detail: the name of a fast food chain varies between “Bernie’s” and “Barnie’s” according to the versions of the episode. This deliberated variation has been designed to reflect the central theme of the episode, i.e. the manipulation of reality and gaslighting.
In the episode, Maria, a food researcher, is faced with subtle alterations of her reality, orchestrated by Verity, a former classmate. One of the first signs of this manipulation is the change of the name of the restaurant where Mary’s boyfriend worked, passing from “Barnie” to “Bernie’s” or vice versa, depending on the version of the episode seen. This detail has been designed so that the spectators themselves experience a form of gaslighting, questioning their perception of reality.
Charlie Brooker, the creator of the series, confirmed that two episodes of the episode were transmitted, each with a speaker other than the name of the restaurant, randomly distributed to Netflix users. This innovative approach aims to immerse more spectators in Mary’s experience, obscuring the border between fiction and reality.
This narrative strategy recalls the 2018 Bandersnch interactive episode, in which the viewer’s choices influenced the course of history. In “Bane Black”, however, spectators do not make an active choice, but are nevertheless subject to narrative variations, strengthening the feeling of confusion and uncertainty.
