American Psycho: many fans have not yet understood the film according to the director

A male satire … first degree grip

25 years ago, Christian Bale died on the screen as Patrick Bateman, the New York Golden boy obsessed with appearances. A psychopathic Yuppy, whose varnish perfection hid frozen violence. For Mary Harron, the director, this film that has become a cult, Bateman’s popularity in some men, in particular the “Wall Street Bros”, remains a mystery.

“I am still so surprised. We have not thought at all that it would be adopted by this audience,” he said Letterboxd Journal.

The character, who cumulating money, powerful power and suit, is now widely shared on social networks, deviated in the form of an equal or taken as a toxic success model. Harron recalls, however, that Christian Bale interprets him as a ridiculous, embarrassing man, a thousand championships from a hero to admire. “When he talks about hip-hop in a box, it’s so annoying. He tries to be cool, but it’s a failure.”

A strange reading of Alpha Vility

The misunderstanding is undoubtedly obvious that many refuse to see: American Psycho It was designed as a gay satire of toxic masculinity. The novel by Bret Easton Ellis, itself openly homosexual, has already explored homoerotic rituals between ultra-behavior men: in finance, in sport, wherever the cult of the body and the state becomes obsession.

“There is something very gay in this way that men should fetish their appearance, their musculature, their social domain,” develops Harron. His film, far from glorifying this lifestyle, derives it with frozen irony. Patrick Bateman is not a model, it is a product of a predatory company that, according to Harron, has won only since then: “The rich are richer, the poorest poor”.

While a new adaptation of the novel is in preparation, with Luca Guadagnino to the realization and perhaps Austin Butler in the main role, the director remembers one thing: Bateman is a monster. But a disturbing monster of reflection, because it is adorned with the most desirable attributes of our culture.
