The story of a child who assigns his parents to justice
Directed by Nadine Labaki, Chaos Zain’s journey follows, a 12 -year -old boy who lives on the streets of Beirut. Born without documents, left to himself, it survives in an environment where misery, violence and oblivion are the norm. The film begins as he is in prison and dates back to his story until he decides to assign his parents to justice … for giving him his life.
The tone is raw, without filter, but never unhappy. Nadine Labaki’s films abandoned childhood without pathos or offers and show the gears of a society that leaves his children on the margins. The film is not trying to shock, but to show. Through Zain’s gaze, an entire system is revealed: that of rights without rights, isolated mothers, invisible refugees, absent adults.
The strength of Chaos It also comes from its cast. Most of the actors are not professional. Zain at Rafeea, the boy who embodies the main role, was himself a Syrian refugee at the time of filming. It gives the film a raw, almost documentary authenticity that crosses each floor.
A world shock, greeted in Cannes and appointed to the Oscars
Presented official competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Chaos He had moved the croisette to tears. He received the jury prize and aroused an honor of several minutes during his projection. The film then lived an exceptional journey: selected for the Oscars in the best category of international films, appointed to the Golden Globes, distributed in over 70 countries.
At the box office, Chaos He has generated over 60 million dollars worldwide, an impressive figure for a low budget drag. In France, he had attracted almost 1.4 million viewers indoors.
But beyond the figures, the emotional impact of the film remains. Chaos It speaks of stolen childhood, survival, dignity. It is a film that agitates, that remains, what questions. It does not give a lesson, but forces to look where we prefer to look away.
The film will be collected by Netflix France on May 21. There are a few days to (re) find out and face it. Because we do not leave unknown.
