Alpha seen in Cannes 2025: Julia Ducournau surprises with an intimate movie about mourning

The film took place in the 1980s, in a port city marked with an unidentified epidemic. We follow Alpha, a 13 -year -old girl who lives alone with her mother. His uncle, who suffers from the disease, gradually becomes the emotional center of history. Ringled by a hemated and overwhelming Tahar Rahim, this character embodies the slow disappearance of a loved one who nobody wants to let go. Ducournau does not abandon its charm for the body, but this time it treats it with sweeterness. Patients freeze, literally, until they are pushed. The visual effects are sober but powerful and mourning stands out as the real topic of the film: how to continue to love what disappears? The omnipresent soundtrack sometimes supports the subject a little too much, but the film retains a real formal dress. Less radical than his previous ones, Alpha marks a new step on the journey of a director who is now looking for elsewhere.
