A tense and intransigent narrative device
Issued in 2017, Dunkirk He is interested in the Dynamo operation, a mission of evacuation of the allied troops trapped on the beaches of northern France in May 1940. To tell this episode, Christopher Nolan opted for an original and tight structure, crossing three thunderstorms: a week on the beach, one day at sea, an hour in the air. This choice of tangled narrative allows the director to cover the different fronts of the conflict, accentuating the emergency perceived by the characters.
The film is based on a radical economy of dialogues. No character is really developed and the enemy never appears directly on the screen. This approach, often deemed confused, helps to refocalize attention on survival itself, as close as possible to bodies, machines and elements. The work on Sound, supported by the music of Hans Zimmer and his omnipresent ticking, strengthens the tension. The syncopated assembly, the scarcity of replicas and the lack of teaching explanation give the film a dry brutality that has permanently marked the genre.
A reconstruction greeted by historians
Aimed at the places of the evacuation, Dunkirk Choose a minimalist, but faithful reconstruction. Nolan uses vintage planes (Real Spitfires, no digital model) and several civil boats on the screen have actually participated in the 1940 operation. The director favors the practical effects, with very little appeal to the synthetic image. This prejudice is regularly cited as a key element in the authenticity of the film by military historians, in particular for its aerial scenes, considered one of the most beautiful altitude representations at altitude during the Second World War.
The production also invited historical consultants to regulate uniforms, equipment and troops. If some choices have been condensed for dramaturgical reasons, the whole story remains aligned with the main lines of the operation. Avoiding the heroization of military figures and focusing on the feeling of encirclement and chaos, Dunkirk He manages to represent history without excessive solemnity.
The film has won three Oscars (best editing, best audio assembly, better sound mix) and today it remains regularly mentioned as an example of cinematographic realism. It is broadcast tonight on Rmc Story at 21:05
