The Testaments, the new series will be set years after the events of the original plot, will have Aunt Lydia as a key piece in the fall of Gilead
The Handmaid’s Tale It came to an end after six seasons. But fans will not be helpless for so long, because the spin-offThe Testaments (The willsin Portuguese), based on the book of the same name of Margaret Atwoodlaunched in 2019, is already in production.
The second chapter of history is set 15 years after the events of the first book, The tale of AIA. The series, which is not yet forecast of debut, but should be released by the end of the year, will be headed by Ann Dowdwho lived Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale.
One of the central figures of the new chapter is Aunt Lydia. The character, who until then was a symbol of female repression within the system, now will have an ambiguous role: she follows as a tutor within the hierarchy Gileadbut secretly acts with resistance. The promise is to finally show backstage of the regime’s collapse – with Lydia at the center of the conspiracy.
New protagonists, even legacy
Two of the central characters of The Testaments They are the daughters of June: Agnes (Chase Infiniti, Above any suspicion) – In fact, Hannah, created by a family of commanders – and Daisy (Lucy Halliday), who grew up in Canada and begins to unravel the origins that will change her destination. Both will have essential roles in the fight to infiltrate Gilead and dismantle the system inside. The June connection creates a powerful emotional bridge with fans of the original series.
The series will still have Rowan Blanchard (Girl knows the world2014) such as Shunamite, a teenager of the Gilead elite, created within the privileges of the regime; and MATTEA CONFORT (Frozen22019), like Becka, a young woman of humble origin who studies with the elite. The cast also includes MABEL LI, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde rings, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Pandya and Kira Gloien.
The Fall of Gilead
Just like in the book, The TestamentsIt will show the beginning of the collapse of the regime. In previous interviews, Margaret Atwood pointed out that one of the central questions of the work is: “How do these regimes disappear?” The series aims to give this answer to the canvases – and with the perspective of the women who lived and resisted this system.
Creative and future involvement of June
The new series will have executive production of Bruce Millercreator of The Handmaid’s Taleand will also feature Elisabeth Moss in production. Second Millerthe idea has always been to expand Gilead’s universe, and Atwood would have collaborated since the beginning of continuation development. There is no official confirmation yet on the return of Moss Like June, but the character remains alive in chronology and may arise at some point.
When to debut?
Still with no official release date, The Testaments continues in production and is expected to narrow at the end of 2025 or beginning of 2026at Hulu in the United States. In Brazil, the exhibition should occur via platforms that already distribute The Handmaid’s Talelike Paramount+ or Globoplay, although nothing has been announced so far.
The Handmaid’s Tale It takes place in a dystopian future, in a republic where there are no more newspapers, magazines, books or movies. Nor are there the rights to study or defense, with severe sanctions applied to all who stand against Gilead, previously known as the United States of America.
Last season, June (Elisabeth Moss, The Invisible Man) continues in his struggle to destroy Gilead, Luke (OT FAGBENLE, Black widow) and Moira (Samira Wiley, Orange is the new black) join resistance and Serene (Yvonne Strahovski, The War of Tomorrow), in turn, tries to reform the regime from the inside.
