Neil Lemlein, a veteran entertainment marketing executive who worked for CBS, Universal Studios and Fox, has died. He was 71 years old.
Lemlein died on July 22 of kidney cancer in Aurora, Colorado, said his wife, Patty Lemlein.
Born on September 29, 1950, Neil Charles Lemlein grew up in White Plains, New York. He graduated from Tulane University, earned a master’s degree in international relations from New York University, and landed at the advertising agency Young & Rubicam on Madison Avenue.
In San Francisco and later in Los Angeles, Lemlein directed marketing and media campaigns for nearly 200 films while working at advertising agencies such as CBS, Universal Studios and 20th Century Fox.
At Doyle Dane Bernbach, he developed a marketing plan war of the galaxies (1977) and at D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, established and expanded that agency’s entertainment practice, attracting clients such as Paramount and NBC.
And as Universal’s Executive Vice President, Lemlein helped create the first Jurassic Park theme park attraction.
A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1989, he was most recently president of Around the Bend Media, a film production, marketing and financing company.
In addition to his wife, whom he married in 1986, actor Michael Douglas visited during their wedding, survivors include his children Ryan and Alexandra; When is the mother? and sister Diana.
