Actress says that at the beginning of her career, many roles revolved around ‘desirability’ and male wishes. ‘Something has changed’

Scarlett Johansson He is looking back and seeing how much the script has changed. In a recent interview with The Timesthe actress talked about how the roles offered to women in Hollywood have evolved since she started, as a teenager. And it was not a particularly sweet memory.

“When I was younger, many of the roles I received or tried to conquer had ambitions or character arches that revolved around their own desirability, male look or men -centered stories,” she said. “This has happened with less frequency now, something has changed.”

The change, according to Johanssongoes through a new generation of more complex actresses and female characters, as well as an industry that begins (albeit slowly) to offer more diverse opportunities. “The message is different. There are many more reference models, women in visible power positions, and the opportunities I have today are different from the ones I had before,” he explained.

This is not the first time that Scarlett comments on the limits imposed by Hollywood. In 2022, she said she was “hypersexualized” very early and even thought she couldn’t leave the box in which they put her. “I felt objectified and limited. A point came where I thought, ‘People must think I’m 40 years old.’ And that was no longer desirable, it turned something against which I needed to fight.”

This awareness from someone who, for years, was one of Hollywood’s greatest sex symbols (often in default of his own desire) wide how much cinema still needs to rethink who is writing these stories and to whom they are being written. What Johansson Lived is not past distant: it is an uncomfortable memory that continues to hang over the industry, even under new direction.
