Convicted with his brother for the murder of his parents in 1989, he has fulfilled life imprisonment since the 1990s
Erik Menendezone of the brothers convicted of the murder of their own parents in the United States, was hospitalized last Friday, 18, with a “serious medical condition.” The information was confirmed by his lawyer to the American network NBC News.
Menendez53, has been arrested in California since the 1990s. According to the defense, he was taken to a hospital near the prison where he was serving time, but the details of the health condition have not yet been officially disclosed.
“Erik is facing a serious medical condition. At this time, his family calls for privacy,” said the lawyer Mark Geragos.
Erik and the brother, Lyle Menendezwere sentenced in 1996 to life imprisonment without the right to parole for the murder of Joseph and Kitty Menendezin 1989. The case gained national repercussion in the US and inspired documentaries, books and dramatizations, including a season of the series Law & Order: True Crimefrom the NBC.
In recent years, the brothers have once again attracted attention from the press after claiming, in a new resource, that they have suffered sexual abuse by their father during their childhood (which would have motivated the murders). The possibility of a new trial is still being analyzed by the California authorities.
