One Piece Red, which was released on August 10, offers some very colorful music tracks in addition to the epic adventure. But who will interpret the VF songs of this new feature film of the franchise?
Hitting theaters on August 10th, One Piece Red immediately topped the French box office with over 260,000 viewers!
Thus, it largely surpasses the recent successes of the films on the big screen that created the event: My Hero Academia World Heroes Mission (43,000 admissions on the first day), Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (113,000) and Demon Slayer Le Train de l’Infini (58,000). ).
In the film, we meet the hero, monkey D. Accompanied by Luffy, his loyal crew. The latter are preparing to attend the eagerly awaited music festival.
The world’s most popular singer Uta will take the stage for the first time. She, who is none other than the daughter of the legendary pirate Shank Le Roux, will reveal the special power of her voice that can change the world.
To build its story, Saga creator Eiichiro Oda wanted to feature a female character who is very passionate about music. It was important for director Goro Taniguchi and screenwriter Tsutomu Kuroiva to frame the narrative around bombastic musical moments.
Those who know and appreciate One Piece know that music is a new theme in the saga’s films. The screenwriter explains.
“Our challenge was to open up the film to as many people as possible, it seemed obvious to us to combine a unifying and entertaining element around the world: music. Everyone would be able to identify and own the film.“, he emphasizes.
To perform the songs of One Piece Red, the team called on a superstar in Japan: Ado. Only 19 years old, he is one of the most listened to artists on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, the music singles chart in the Land of the Rising Sun.
In France, it’s the 25-year-old Hoch who pushes the song as Uta’s singing voice. A big fan of One Piece since childhood, the singer did not hesitate when asked to participate in the film.
“I knew One Piece when I was 7 years old, I used to go to the bookstore near my house a lot and I came across it. It means a lot to me because I was reading manga as soon as I learned to read when I was little.he says.
“I was really into it when I was little, it was a mix of a lot of things that I really liked. I remember my mum giving me all the books that were out at the time for Christmas. I read everything. I was thorough!”– says Hoshi.
“I read the manga before, but I was into the anime when they offered me this collaboration, so it was incredible! When they came to me to offer me, I didn’t hesitate for a second because it was a childhood dream.” , The artist hammers.
Hoshi still had some trepidation about embodying Uta through the songs and about the project as a whole.
“I’m really a fan, I want everything to be like the original and I don’t want to disappoint One Piece fans! Especially since it’s the French version and I usually only watch it in VO, so I know how much the fans are paying. Pay attention to all the details.”– explains the singer.
“I told myself that there will definitely be people who don’t like it, but I still want to pay tribute to this anime that I love so much”The artist claims.
If Hoshi had a form of fear, it is because the training is too difficult. You have to adapt the songs at the same time keeping the same meaning but without literal translation of the lyrics.
“You have to make sure it’s nice to be heard and understood in French. It was a lot of pressure and work, but I tried to do my best”he says.
For the Versailles resident, it is very important that a popular anime like One Piece be adapted to music in French, as this is not done anymore or very rarely.
“I think it’s important that the songs are available in French, so that people have the choice to see the film in VO or VF, and they also have the choice to listen to the songs in VO or VF.”
It is good for children to go to the cinema to see a movie or even for adults who do not necessarily know the world.he claims.
“For me, the songs have a more global meaning than just the film, because there is a character that a lot of people can identify with. They identify with the character as well as the songs, and I think it’s great to be able to do that in French.”Hosh concludes.
One Piece Red hits theaters August 10.
