Taika Waititi and James Gunn weren’t natural choices when it came to making high-budget superhero films, but they brought their own unique voices and approach to the game. We were discussing script ideas and trying to find a new director. People at Marvel wanted to go with a different director, and it was their choice, so it was like “Who is this person going to be?”
One of the criticisms leveled at Thomas Jane’s The Punisher, which was directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, is that it hit the jackpot when it comes to the amount of violence required to be a true Punisher movie. Instead of Rob Zombie, the Punisher character came into the hands of Lexi Alexander, who escalated the violence for the right Punisher: War Zone, but still created a film that even the director hates. The character was then given a certain level of stability when fan-favorite Jon Bernthal donned Frank Castle’s bulletproof vest for several appearances on Netflix. But that too has been canceled.
Marvel Netflix heroes are returning to the MCU, with Daredevil appearing in the She-Hulk series and Kingpin added to Echo. However, despite Rosario Dawson’s spread rumors, The Punisher will not appear in a new Disney + show. But if and when he does … maybe Rob Zombie can get back in the game?
