Other rarities in the set include a new stereo mix of all nine segments of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” merged, an alternative version of “Have a cigar”an interpretation of “Wish You Were Here” with the jazz violinist STÉPHANE GRAPPELLI and another version of “Wish You Were Here” with David Gilmour on the Steel pedal.
Bootleg Official
The show at La Sports Arena was recorded by the famous Bootlegger Mike “The Mic” Millard. Throughout the 1970s, he used a fake wheelchair to bring a Nakamichi 550 recorder for shows in Los Angeles. When the lights diminished, he connected the recorder to microphones attached to his hat. Using this method, he captured impeccable recordings of Genesis, Rush, LED ZEPPELIN, Eric Clapton, Yes and many other giants of the time.
Many of these bands recorded their own shows using more sophisticated equipment than anything Millard could use on arenas, but Pink Floyd didn’t do it. The drummer Nick Mason told Rolling Stone in 2018:
“The problem is that we just entered a time when everyone was paranoid with bootleggers and didn’t record shows. It was great to have Pink Floyd in Pompeii, but I regret never filmed and recorded a show of Dark Side, Animals or Wish you were herein truth… [Do período do Animals]Certainly there is nothing really good, just return mixes and so on. We should really have done everything, filmed and recorded right. ”
Earlier this month, David Gilmour elaborated the issue in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“There are a lot of mixing table ribbons that in the 70s would have been recorded on cassette tape. And later, in the 80s and 90s, they were recorded in Dat, but they get straight from the mixing table. But we record most of the shows only in terms of sound, and God knows where all these ribbons are. [já que eles compraram recentemente o catálogo do Pink Floyd]. So you have to convince them to take a look. ”
It seems that they did just that and concluded that Millard created a better recording than any mixing table cassette stored in the safe. The audio was restored and remastered by Steven Wilson. Unfortunately, Millard did not live to see the day his tape was included in an official Floyd release. He passed away in 1994.
